Reference Number 1885
David Greenlee of Brazeal Creek who had come from Haywood Co., NC. His father was one of the Revolutioary soldiers who had seen the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. David Greenlee fell in love with Martha Moutray, descendant of the old Carolina family of that name. Both were of good standing and it seems difficult to understand why their parents should have objected to the marriage. Parental objections were much the same then as now, but of course,so,too, was love. Both being barely twenty, they needed parental consent and, further, being minors, the law required that they be married in Crawford County, where they resided. There being more than one way to skin a cat, they eloped. They went to Anthonies Mill where they enlisted the services of the justice of the peace of Washington County. Here they were married with the justice standing in Washington County and they standing in Crawford County.
THERE WERE AT LEAST THREE UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE CHILDREN COUNTED IN THIS HOUSEHOLD 1830 ONE 5/10 (15/20 IN 1840) 1840 ONE 20/30 TWO 15/20.
The Greenlee book showed David and Martha as having seven children but did not name them.

HISTORY OF FOREST HILL AND VICINITY, by John Steele McCormick, Copyright 1978
A History From Missouri, Printed in U.S.A.
THE MORGAN H. SCOTT FAMILY
Morgan Hendrix Scott was one of twelve children of William Childress and Judith (Forsyth) Scott of Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. The Mother was from France (*census says VA) and never learned to speak English. The father was a member of the old Scott family from Virginia. Morgan Scott was born in 1831 and died 1898; married July 23, 1857, Louisa Greenlee, born 1830 and died 1904. She was the daughter of Crawford County's early settler, David Greenlee of Brazeal Creek who had come here from Haywood Co, SC.(*sic Haywood County is in NC) His Father was one of the Revolutionary soldiers who had seen the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. (This would have been David Sr.)
David Greenlee fell in love with Martha Moutry, descendant of the old Carolina family of that name. Both were of good standing and it seems difficult to understand why their parents should object to the marriage. But parental objections were much the same then as now, but of course, so too was love. Both being barely twenty, they needed parental consent and further, being minors, the law required that they be married in Crawford County, where they resided. There being more than one was to kill a cat, they eloped. They went to Anthonies Mill where they enlisted the services of the Justice of the Peace of Washington County. Here they were married with the Justice standing in Washington County, and they standing in Crawford County.
Two of their daughters married Henderson Hardy of Forest Hill, and their daughter Louisa married as above stated Morgan Scott.
In 1869 Morgan Scott settled in Forest Hill on the farm known by his name. In those days wild game was abundant and as many as sixteen deer were known to have raided the Scott's corn field. One year he farmed the Wesley King place and while he would be working at one end of the field, the deer would come around and eat in the other end. That year they lost their entire crop.
The Morgan Scott family lived in Forest Hill all their lives and are buried on their farm in their private burying ground.
Four children of Morgan H. and Louisa (Greenlee) Scott: (They had 6 children)
1st child: Sterling Scott, born April 16, 1872, and died March 18, 1932, married Carrie and settled on a portion of the home place. (**This is wrong, He was the 3rd child. He was born April 16, 1862 and died March 18, 1932. He married Carrie Lanham)
2nd child: Melissa Scott (see below) (**This is wrong, Melissa was the 1st child, born June 16, 1858 and died February 21, 1945, She married Tom Lanham, She was his 3rd wife)
3rd child: Georgian Scott, died young (**This is wrong, She was the 6th child, born April 21, 1868 and died May 24, 1949) I believe because she had an illegitimate child and was ousted from the family she was declared dead) Georgia married Clarence Beaury)
4th child: Jo, who spent many years prospecting. He married shortly before he died, no children. (**This is wrong, he was the 5th child and a twin to Georgia) He was born April 21, 1868 and died February 17, 1927. He married his cousin Sarah Annie Scott Jarvis, widow of Foster Jarvis)
Melissa Scott, second child of Morgan Scott was born about 1874? and died about 1950, She married October 2, 1895, Charles Thomas Lanham who was born September 22, 1842 and died May 26, 1926. They lived on the old home place. Mrs. Lanham for years was the oldest graduate of Forest Hill School residing in the district. Her home was always a pleasant place for anyone wishing to know old time hospitality and customs. She had a deep appreciation for history and keepsakes, and never tired of telling of old times.
A clipping from a November 1936 "Bourbon Standard" Newspaper reveals how an afternoon was spent by the pupils of Forest Hill School and what was to be seen in her humble but interesting home. This excerpt was written by Florence Hamlin and Anny Mary Finney. "Among the interesting things were her old spool bed, a harness frame and the slate she used when she went to school on Brazeal. She showed us the silver star from her great grandfather's gun. (David Greenlee, Sr.) This gun was at Lord Cornwallis' surrender. She showed us an old lancet, a pocket-book made in 1840, some wooden lasts, a Confederate $100 bill, a cow bell that came with the family to Missouri from Virginia and which had been used in early times in the Allegheny Mountains".
"When we went upstairs she showed us her spinning wheel, flax brakes, shuttles, and flays. Outside we saw an iron pot that was brought across the Mississippi to St. Louis when there were only four houses in town. We saw relics of Prices' raid that were picked up after his trip through the Country. She also showed us her arrow heads and rock collection and her home made baskets".
Her husband was a Civil War veteran and both her sons served in World War 11. Her three children:
1. Homer, who removed to St. Louis where he married.
2. Hendrix, who lived with his Mother on the old home place, married Caroline: died about 1957, No children.
3. Annie, married Ray Raggs of Leasburg. Later lived at Union, MO. The Norris Lanham family of Dollar Mill are descendants of Morgan H. Scott through Charles Thomas Lanham's first marriage.

(Note: I have no way of knowing who put this article in this book, but a lot is incorrect. The Norris Lanham Family were not descendants of Morgan H. Scott, other than his daughter Georgia had a son Elbridge Gary Scott by him. Norris Lanham was the son of Charles Lanham by his 2nd wife and a brother of Carrie Lanham)

It is unlikely that Elijah married Nancy Little (as marriage record shows) one day before he married Rachel Ella Litton (as shown in Genealogy of the Greenlee Family, page 545-7). Could they be the same person or did something get mixed up in the transcribing for the book. To date (1996) a marriage record has not been found. Elijah's death date shown June 16, 1850 in the above book. "Started for California March 22 and died June 16 when I was four years old. One brother born August 4 after he died. Sub. By Mrs. Nancy Summers, daughter of John Elijah. He died near Black Hills, SD on the way to California during the Gold Rush. In religion he was a Methodist.
