| Marriage Record "12.01.1740 is the marriage of Philipp Herper, son of Johann Adam Herper from Niederweiler and Anna Elisabetha, daughter of Nickel(Nikolaus) Kauffmann from Wurroch. The marriage is in Niederweiler. Johann Adam Herper was "Gemeinsmann and Kirchenaltester", he is dead. Nickel Kauffmann is "Schulmeister"." (Tom Bell) Baptism record of Philipp Herper "baptized 27.09.1712 Philipp Herper in Niederweiler. Parents Adam Herper and Eva Katharina.Godfather and Godmother: Philipp Faller zu Lauzenhausen Wieland Schmidt zu Niederweiler, Ottilie, wife of Conrad Dietrich zu Buchenbeuren" ( Tom Bell) It appears that Adam, Nicheol, Jacob, and Maria Margarete Herber (either their mother or possible a sister)(Entry # 5931) and Philip with his wife and children (Entry # 5932)(dated April 22, 1750) all came to America together. (see note below from Tom Bell) Leaving Barenbach and Neiderweiler the Herbers must have sailed up the Rhine River to Rotterdam in the Netherlands. There, they boarded the "Patience". Their ship made one stop along the coast of England, at Cowes, and then sailed for America. Philip was thirty-six years old. The Herber family first settled in the Tulpehocken Valley of Pennsylvania (now Berks County). On March 20, 1752, Philip and Anna Elizabeth Herber gave birth to their son Jacob Herber. He was baptiized on April 12, 1752 at Christ Lutheran Church, Tulpehocken, Pennsylvania.(The Harper Family History by Marsha L Fuller). It is interesting to note, that Philip used the English version of his name, Philip Harper, when transacting legal business. When dealing with the Lutheran Church, he retained his true German name, Philip Herber. "Tom Bell adds: One note probably worth noting is that it appears the family that remained in Barenbach used the HERBER spelling. Our family took on HERPER. So, the folks that came to America together were Philipp's cousins and not his brothers or sisters." ----------------------------------------------------------- -------------------- _FA4: 22 AUG 1760 Augusta Co., VA, Order Book #6, p.406 6 Military Service: 1758 Cpt.
