| From France about 1150. Descendant of House of Verdesine. ------------------------------------------------------------- Fro m Ancestry.com(richard) MacIntyre by Richard MacIntyre Note: The primary source was Harrison (1912). "Surnames of the United Kingdom" London: Eaton Press, Vol. I. Note: Note: "The surname "Harris" originated from the name "Harry," which was at one time also written as "Hanry." This name is common in France and Germany. Note: Note: The orgin of the Herries (Harris) name is given by Robert Douglas in the Peerage of Scotland 1764, page 339 as follows: Note: Note: "This noble and ancient familyis said to be descended from a younger son of the house of Vendosinein France, who settled in Scotland in the reign of King David. The armorial bearing of the family from whence it sprang, being a porcupine (hedgehog). Other French surnames of this family were Herison or Herizon, Heris and Heriz. That family has ever since continued to have the porcupines for their arms, in commemoration of their descent from that great and illustrious house." Note: Note: Another authority by the name of Lower, inthe Patronymica Britannia, 1860, page 156, says that the Herries family was of a Norman race (Northern France). They settled in Scotland in the 12th Century, and were descended from the ancient Norman family of Heriz. Note: Note: In ancient records of Scotland, the names appear in various forms of Heriz, Heryce, Heries, Herries, and de Herries. The surname Herries was used by our family for 300 years in Scotland until 1600. The Irish version "Harris" was used by descendants who immigrated to America. Note: Note: William de Heriz is the first Harris line of whom a record has been found. He witnessed a donation of Henry, Prince of Scotland, to the monastery of Wederhall in Cumberland County, England in 1160.
